Goddess Mahakali

$79 – $139

Wall hanging | 100% cotton

Count her heads. There are ten, with ten feet below them. A meditation verse describes the goddess just this way.

The verse is said before the first episode of the Devi Mahatmya, a Sanskrit scripture of the Goddess still recited at Navratri. It pictures Mahakali with ten faces and ten feet, three eyes and the shine of a blue gem, and names the ten things her hands hold, from a sword to a conch shell.

Maha-Kali means Great Kali. The museum that holds this painting calls her a popular deity of Bengal and notes that the prefix Maha stresses her sovereignty over time, or kala. It catalogues the work as Company painting, a name for work by Indian artists in the 18th and 19th centuries, many of whom painted for European patrons. The record names no artist and gives no date or place.

The Devi Mahatmya is part of the Markandeya Purana. It is generally dated to 400–600 CE and has 700 verses in 13 chapters. In recitation, the meditation verse on Mahakali comes before its first episode. The verse also recalls that Brahma praised her while Vishnu slept.

In that episode, Vishnu lies asleep on the cosmic ocean, held in yogic sleep by the Goddess. Two demons, Madhu and Kaitabha, threaten Brahma. He praises the Goddess and asks her to release Vishnu. She does, and Vishnu fights the demons for five thousand years. Then the demons, proud of their strength and deluded by the Goddess, offer him a boon. He asks for their deaths.

“Lord Hari fought with them for five thousand years.”

Devi Mahatmya, chapter 1, on Vishnu and the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, in Swami Sivananda’s English translation
