The Underworld
Around 1150, an English illuminator drew Hell as a monster’s mouth, with an angel locking its door. Bosch filled his Hell with giant instruments. Böcklin imagined a silent island of the dead. And Orpheus sang his way into the underworld to bring his wife back.
