Hypnosis
$79 – $139
A 2019 film borrowed this image, beam of light and all.

Sascha Schneider was born in Saint Petersburg in 1870 and trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In 1904 he became a professor at the art school in Weimar. That is also the year written under his initials, S.S., at the lower right of this image. Here hypnosis looks like a physical force. A man whose head is lost in black grips a young man by the wrist. A beam of light runs from his hidden face to the young man’s upturned face.
Schneider’s partner, the painter Hellmuth Jahn, began to blackmail him over his homosexuality, then a crime in Germany. Schneider left for Italy, where it was not. Later he co-founded Kraft-Kunst, an institute for bodybuilding, and some of the models for his art trained there.
More than a century later, the director Robert Eggers drew on Schneider and a few other Symbolist painters for the mythological images in his 2019 film The Lighthouse. He has named Hypnose as the source of the shot where light beams from Willem Dafoe’s eyes. His composition is different, he said, but the image stuck with him.
“…that particular shot is a rip-off of a Symbolist painter named Sascha Schneider.”
Robert Eggers, interviewed by River Donaghey, Vice, October 15, 2019
