The Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones
$79 – $139
In a valley full of bones, God asked the prophet Ezekiel one question. His answer was careful.
“Son of man, can these bones live?” Ezekiel answered, “O Lord God, thou knowest” (Ezekiel 37:3). Doré drew what happens next. The bones come together, the dead rise, and the prophet stands dark against the sky.

Ezekiel 37 sets the prophet down in a valley full of bones, “very dry.” Asked if they can live, Ezekiel leaves the answer to God. He is told to prophesy to the bones. As he does, there is a noise and a shaking, and the bones come together, “bone to his bone.” Sinews, flesh and skin follow. Breath comes last, and the dead stand up on their feet.
Gustave Doré drew the scene for an illustrated Bible published in French at Tours in 1866, with an English edition issued in London. He drew in shades of gray directly on the woodblock, and an engraver cut the block, interpreting his tones. That is why the plate is a wood engraving “after” Doré. Doré shows several stages at once. Some of the dead are bare skeletons, some are wrapped in shrouds, and a man at the upper left already stands whole. Above them the prophet is dark against the sky, under a thin crescent moon.
Then the chapter explains the vision. The bones are “the whole house of Israel,” God tells the prophet, and the people have been saying, “Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost” (37:11). Ezekiel was one of the exiles in Babylonia. The dry bones were the people’s own image of despair. The vision answers it with a promise. “I will open your graves,” God says (37:12).
O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
